Top Four Rental Car Agencies - Fox, Thrifty, Dollar and CarRentals

In this report
Renting a car can be a difficult experience. A way to make the experience more pleasurable is to make a reservation and do some price checks. A last minute reservation is always more expensive then a reservation. Most reservations can be made with a special offer or discount. The majority of car rentals are completed at airports. These are travelers who arrive without local transportation at airports often located miles from town. The car rental companies discussed here obtain most of their business from airport rentals. Rentals are available for most every kind of driving need. These include SUVs, convertibles, Jeeps, and vans. Economy cars are also available to rent. Mileage can be restricted or mileage can be unlimited. Most agencies offer insurance to drivers that don't have car insurance that covers rentals.
#1 - Fox Rent A Car
Fox Rent A Car started out in 1980 at the Los Angeles Airport. All Fox rental locations are at airports. Fox has expanded to having a rental location at most airports in California, Phoenix, Denver, Orlando, Tampa, Grand Rapids, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach and Seattle. There are also several Fox locations overseas including Mexico, Canada, and several Caribbean islands. Fox has daily rental specials starting at $9.99 at all locations. Cars rented by Fox include Chevys, Fords, Dodges, Chrysler, Hundai, and Jeep. All locations do not necessarily offer the same cars in every class. Fox continues to offer a low cost alternative to renting a car at the airport. There rates are much lower than most other rental companies situated at the same airports.
#2 - Thrifty Rent-A-Car System
Thrifty Rent-A-Car is part of the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group. The company has rental sites in 70 countries. About 80 percent of its business is from airport car rentals. The company also operates several parking garages at eight major airports. The company offers the following cars: Chevrolet Aero, Ford Focus, Dodge Avenger, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Impala, Ford Crown Victoria, Ford Escape, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Caravan, cargo vans, and a convertible model. The company is adding green cars to its fleet, and currently offers the Toyota Prius and several flex fuel cars. Rental prices range from 29.99 and up per day. There are some price specials available online, and there is a loyalty program that can bring the cost down. Thrifty has agreements with a number of airlines. If a client rents from Thrifty through their website, the customer can receive credit toward the airline's mileage program. Thrifty also rents through online travel companies. Clients renting through these companies still receive current information on the availability of cars. Thrifty provides rentals for traveling shows and concerts.
#3 -
CarRentals is a company that rents cars through its website. The company is connected with 25 different car companies. If you want to compare prices among several car companies or locations, this is a great place to visit. The 25 car companies include major brands such as Hertz, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, National and Enterprise. Other companies include Fox, Payless, Advantage, Ace, AVR, USave, Carls, and others. CarRentals does not rent cars itself, it simply acts as a car rental broker. Keep in mind that customers need to check the requirements and price of any car contract they sign up for. When a location is requested, the website returns a list of all available cars from each company they contract with. The list is presented by price and car size. Prices vary greatly with each location. There may be a great savings available by picking your locations carefully. CarRentals offers its own specials to clients; it does not always offer specials that a customer may find on a rental company's own website. was acquired last year by If there is a problem with the reservation, a customer needs to call the rental company holding the reservation directly. Some reservation changes can be made on line through CarRentals, but if it is the same day or a location question, the client needs to call directly to the rental agency.
#4 - Dollar Rent-a-Car
Dollar Rent-A-Car is a car rental company where most rental locations are situated at airports. Dollar rents cars overseas in five countries. These are Germany, Austria, United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada. The cars available at Dollar include the Dodge Charger, Dodge Caravan, Chrysler 300, Ford Focus, Fusion, Escape, Mustang Convertible, Chevrolet Aveo, Tahoe and Suburban, Jeep Cherokee, and Lincoln Towncar. Some locations may have different but similar cars. Rental prices start at $29.99 and up. Dollar has more local rental locations than Thrifty, but less locations overall. A number of rental locations are at hotels. The higher number of local locations may make this company a cheaper choice for those who travel where there are Dollar locations.
The Bottom Line
Of the four companies reviewed, the outstanding company was Fox. While Fox only covers a limited part of the country, at those airports it covers, their price was several times lower than other agencies, and their customer service was excellent. Most car rental companies charge much more to rent a car at the airport than they do from a location in town. It is often cheaper to take a taxi to town and rent a car at that location. Usually, it is not a problem to leave your car at the airport location when leaving town. Fox is just cheaper than everybody. Thrifty is a good company for someone who wants to use one company and does a lot of travel to different areas. The company is located in 70 countries and stands behind its products. Thrifty has a good reputation for customer service as well. If a client can take advantage of specials offered by Thrifty, even the airport price is quite reasonable. Thrifty also has a number of local rental sites away from the airport in case a client needs a car and is not traveling through an airport. offers pricing on a number of rental car companies. This can be a great time saver, but CarRentals is just a broker. It cannot always help with problems on site with a rental company. Since their purchase by Expedia, the company has been more responsive to problems. Dollar is located at several international sites and in the United States, again mostly at airports. They do have some locations in town, mostly at various hotels. They have less locations than Thrifty, but offer the same specials. Unless you travel to and from Dollar locations, Thrifty is a better choice due to their higher number of locations.
